Government of Canada Supports Restoration of Théâtre Corona

MONTRÉAL, December 22, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, the Honourable Liza Frulla, today announced funding of $145,000 for the Institut des arts de la scène. The funds will allow the organization to complete the second phase of restoration work on Théâtre Corona.

"Since its reopening six years ago, the Corona has been impressive as much for its architectural beauty as for the quality of its programming", said Minister Frulla. "I am delighted that the Government of Canada is participating in the restoration of this heritage jewel."

Built in 1912 in the Saint-Henri district, the Corona follows the tradition of film theatres. The front of the building includes a window in a monumental arch, a distinctive feature of cinemas circa 1900. Its lavish decor, which was redone in 1923, is representative of the former palaces in the neighbourhood. After being abandoned for more than 30 years, the Corona was restored in order to re-open on October 5, 1998. Since that time, the Institut des arts de la scène has offered programming with an emphasis on song at the Corona.

The current project aims to complete the restoration of the Théâtre Corona by renovating both the foyer and the ticket counter. In addition, the Institut will acquire specialized equipment.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that improve access to performing arts, visual arts, and media arts for Canadians, as well as improves physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. Funding is also provided for the construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment, and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities.

The funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
