Government of Canada Supports Montreal, World Book Capital

MONTREAL, April 23, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $750,000 in additional funding for Montreal, World Book Capital at the opening ceremonies for this major celebration of books. This announcement brings the Government of Canada's total contribution to $1 million.

"We are honoured that Montreal was designated as a World Book Capital by UNESCO,"
said Minister Frulla. "With the world's attention focused on us, we have a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creativity and remarkable work of our authors and the skills of the publishing industry."

In February 2004, UNESCO announced that it had chosen Montreal as the World Book Capital for 2005. Activities will begin on April 23, 2005, World Book and Copyright Day, and will draw to a close in April 2006 with the 6th International Copyright Symposium.

Numerous activities will be organized to promote Canadian authors and literature, including exhibitions, literary tours, conferences and events to cultivate an interest in reading. The program includes an educational component, a cultural component and a socio-economic component.
