Government of Canada Supports the Fundraising Efforts of Seven Alberta Cultural Organizations

CALGARY, June 15, 2005 -- Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament (Edmonton-Centre) Anne McLellan, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $2,245,604 in funding for seven Alberta cultural organizations. These funds will complement the revenues these organizations collected, and deposited into their funds, during fundraising campaigns in the private sector.

The Government of Canada's support is provided to foundations affiliated with the following cultural organizations:

  • Alberta Ballet Company     $ 104,735

  • Alberta Theatre Projects Society     $ 10,000

  • Citadel Theatre     $ 550,660

  • Calgary Philharmonic Society     $1,000,924

  • Edmonton Symphony Society     $ 323,547

  • Edmonton Opera Association     $ 251,586

  • Red Deer Orchestra Association     $ 4,152

"Through the partnerships established with these cultural institutions, our government helps give artists in Alberta the tools they need to innovate and share their works with the public", said Ms. McLellan. "The work that these organizations do is a credit to the entire province."

"Today, we are providing concrete support to major organizations by matching the contributions they collected from businesses and Canadians who believe in the importance of arts and culture to our society. The Government of Canada is proud to be working with them," added Ms. Frulla.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Endowment Incentives component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program, which provides matching funds for donations. It encourages private sector donors to contribute to the endowment funds of arts organizations so that these organizations have access to new and stable sources of funding.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
