Government of Canada Supports Saint Paul University

OTTAWA, June 29, 2005 -- Minister for Internal Trade, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and Member of Parliament (Ottawa-Vanier) Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $125,000 in funding for Saint Paul University for its "Legacy of Wisdom" project. The funds will enable the University to renovate its outdated storage facilities and to purchase specialized equipment for its rare book room and archives.

"I am pleased to announce this funding for an important institution in the National Capital Region, said Mr. Bélanger. This project will enable us to build bridges between Canada's past and present."

"It is important to make our heritage available to future generations, added Minister Frulla. I am pleased that our government is able to help our cultural institutions preserve our collective treasures."

As a result of the "Legacy of Wisdom" project, the University's storage facilities will increase from 1,200 square feet to 6,000 square feet. The new space will be used for archival storage and for a microfiche room and a new public gallery. The expansion will also enable the University to present touring exhibitions to the public.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. The program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts and exhibitions, or that enhance facilities for artistic creation and innovation.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
