Government of Canada Supports Maison Saint-Gabriel
MONTRÉAL, September 6, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced a total of $47,777 in funding for the Maison Saint-Gabriel. The funds will help the museum create a transition room to facilitate the processing of artifacts as well as enable the organization to conduct a study to better know its clientele."Museums cast light on various aspects of our history," said Minister Frulla. "To ensure that future generations are able to enjoy our shared cultural treasures, we must provide museums like Maison Saint-Gabriel with the resources they need today."
The funds will enable the Maison Saint-Gabriel to conduct a marketing study to update client data. A transitional reserve room will also be established for the museum employees to receive, prepare, and pack objects from various collections, so that their condition is preserved. Located in the southwest Montréal neighbourhood of Pointe-Saint-Charles, the Maison Saint-Gabriel has witnessed four centuries of Canadian history. It served as the house for receiving the king's wards from 1668 to 1673. It was also used as a school and later as a farmhouse. In 1966, it was transformed into a museum.
The Department of Canadian Heritage is contributing $44,777 in funding to the Maison Saint-Gabriel through two programs. Of this amount, $15,869 is being provided through the Museums Assistance Program, which seeks to help Canadian museums and related institutions undertake projects that foster excellence and facilitate access to our national heritage. An additional amount of $31,908 is being provided through the Department's Capacity Building Component for Arts Organizations of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP). The CAHSP's objective is to support modern management and greater financial stability in heritage organizations.
Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal Budget.
