Government of Canada Supports Promotion of Performing Arts in the Gaspé Peninsula

CARLETON, September 6, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced $30,000 in funding for Maximum 90, an arts presentation group in the Baie des Chaleurs. The funds will be used for two initiatives: organizing the fourth year of Festival La Virée, a traditional music and storytelling festival, and the production of an annual schedule of cultural programs for the region.

"Maximum 90 proves that it is possible to make a major impact in the field of arts presentation outside the large urban centres," said Minister Frulla. "The Government of Canada is proud to support this cultural institution in its efforts to offer high-quality performances to local and visiting audiences alike."

Since 1978, Maximum 90 has been presenting professional performances in the Gaspé through an annual program of music and dance. From October 6 to 9, 2005, audiences will have an opportunity to attend traditional music and storytelling performances and workshops at Festival La Virée.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
