Government of Canada Supports International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People

MONTRÉAL, September 20, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla has announced financial assistance for the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ CANADA), an organization devoted to promoting theatre arts among young audiences. ASSITEJ is planning to hold its annual international conference in Montreal during the World Festival of the Arts for Young Audiences.

The Minister of Canadian Heritage has granted ASSITEJ CANADA more than $484,000 in funding over the last four years through programs such as Arts Presentation Canada, Trade Routes, the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program, and the Official Languages Program.

"Accessibility to artistic experiences is key, particularly for our young people, if we hope to build a creative, innovative, internationally competitive society ready to face the world," stated Minister Frulla. "We are pleased to be a major partner of this important international gathering of individuals who all share a great thirst and an enormous passion for the arts and young people."

The 15th ASSITEJ World Congress and Festival of the Arts for Young People will take place in Montréal from September 20 to 30. A thousand artists, producers, broadcasters, and viewers from the international arts scene for young audiences are expected to attend from some 50 countries. About 30 shows will be presented during the Congress, which will also include the ASSITEJ International general meeting, as well as conferences, forums, debates, and workshops.

Funding for this project was provided for in the relevant federal budgets.
