Government of Canada Supports MEG Festival

MONTREAL, October 19, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced funding of $25,000 for the 2005 MEG Festival.

"Our goal is to bring Canadians together through cultural and artistic diversity. The MEG Festival helps accomplish this by featuring avant-garde and innovative Canadian artists," said Minister Frulla. "I am pleased to support this year's Festival, which is sure to generate a great deal of enthusiasm."

The MEG Festival promotes new music and creators of hybrid and electronic music. The seventh edition of the Festival takes place from October 19 to 22 in various venues in Montréal. It will include more than 30 shows. Artists from across Canada will present their works. This year an international conference has been added for industry members to discuss the challenges faced by creators of electronic music.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada Program. The Program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
