Government of Canada Supports Red Earth Youth Artists Collective

WINNIPEG, November 4, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Winnipeg South Centre) Anita Neville, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister Responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $230,000 in funding for the Red Earth Youth Artists Collective (REYAC). Funds will enable the organization to carry out a multi-faceted project to promote and strengthen participation by Aboriginal young people, emerging artists, producers, and presenters in Manitoba's cultural sector.

"Manitoba's artistic and cultural life will be enriched through the work of this organization," said Ms. Neville. "Through the Encouraging Young Artists To Reach for the Horizon (E.A.R.T.H.) project, REYAC will offer emerging presenters and young artists across the province an excellent way to gain experience and develop their skills. "

"Our Government's support to this organization demonstrates how our various programs can together help address the needs of communities," said Minister Frulla. "This global approach enables us to cultivate a vibrant and creative cultural life in communities that reflect Canada's multicultural society and promote a diversity of views and cultural expressions."

The E.A.R.T.H. project will help provide emerging Aboriginal presenters, as well as those living in rural and remote communities, with networking and professional development opportunities. In addition, REYAC will provide assistance for new and emerging presenters to carry out audience development activities and to bring new performing arts experiences to their communities.

Financial assistance of $130,000 was provided under the Presenter Development component of the Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Financial assistance of $100,000 was provided under the Capacity Building component of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP). This component helps individual arts and heritage organizations improve their administrative, organizational, and financial structures.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
