Minister Announces Appointments to Canada Council

OTTAWA, April 28, 1995 Canadian Heritage Minister Michel Dupuy today announced four appointments to the Canada Council. They are Mr. François Colbert, St-Lambert, Québec, appointed vice-president, and Mr. Pierre Boutet, Charlesbourg, Québec, Ms. Patricia Grattan, St. John's, Newfoundland, and Mr. Max Wyman, Lions Bay, British Columbia, who were named members.

Mr. François Colbert

François Colbert is a professor of marketing and a member of the executive committee of l' École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal, where he has taught since 1973. He has held the Chair for Management of the Arts since 1991, is responsible for advanced studies in the management of cultural organizations (Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées en gestion d'organismes culturels) and is also Chairman of Peofessional Affairs. For nearly 20 years, Mr. Colbert has been associated with arts and culture, with special interest in the performing arts, museum and film sectors. Mr. Colbert is also the author of textbooks on subjects such as the marketing of arts and culture (Le Marketing des arts et de la culture, published in 1993). He has published more than sixty articles and research writings on marketing and the arts, organized numerous symposia related to management of arts management, and has spoken at several conferences held in Canada and around the world.

Mr. Pierre Boutet

President of the Corporation de l'Opéra de Québec since 1992, Pierre Boutet was musical director and advisor at Radio-Canada for 25 years. He began his career as operatic tenor, obtaining his musical training in Quebec City, Toronto, New York, Rome and Paris. As musical director and advisor at Radio-Canada from 1964 to 1990, Mr. Boutet was responsible for several significant network productions, including Récital, Concert Intime and Orchestres canadiens. He also produced the regular two-hour Quebec radio series titled les Grands Concerts de Radio-Canada, as well as a number of special concerts, notably the Governor's Concert, presented on the occasion of the Summit of French- Speaking Countries (le Sommet de la Francophonie) held in Québec City in October, 1986. Throughout his career, Mr. Boutet has endeavoured to encourage young musicians, many of whom first performed under his direction with l'Orchestre de Chambre de Radio- Canada in Quebec City, to pursue a career in music.

Ms. Patricia Grattan

Patricia Grattan is executive director (under the new corporate structure) of the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, located in St. John's, Newfoundland, and president of the Canadian Art Museum Directors' Organization, of which she had been secretary since 1990. During 1991-1992, Ms. Grattan was a member of the Cultural Industries Consultants Group, a multi-disciplinary arts group advising on the development of a major Canada-Newfoundland arts funding agreement. From 1990-1994, she developed a major proposal and took part in the subsequent planning of the new art gallery building, a complex scheduled for completion in 1997 and which will house the gallery, museum and archives. Ms. Grattan has participated in many museum management-related seminars and symposia, has organized national and international exhibition tours, was on the editorial advisory board of Arts Atlantic magazine in Charlottetown, P.E.I. (1978-1994), and has been a frequent member of grants juries for the Canada Council and Museum Assistance Program.

Mr. Max Wyman

Born in Wellingborough, England, Max Wyman is a writer whose works include "Evelyn Hart: An Intimate Portrait" (1991), "Dance Canada : An Illustrated History" (1989), "The Royal Winnipeg Ballet: The First Forty Years" (1978), and "Vancouver Forum: Old Powers, New Forces", published under his direction in 1992. He has contributed to many publications, including "Grove's Encyclopedia of Music" (London), the "International Encyclopedia of Dance" (New York), and the "New Canadian Encyclopedia", and has written numerous magazine articles and scripts for radio, television and film. Recipient of Canada Council research and travel grants, Mr. Wyman received the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1977 and, in 1986, was named Man of the Year by the Vancouver Community Arts Council. His travel writings have covered Europe, Russia, the South Pacific, South- East Asia, and elsewhere. The writer is currently engaged on an authorized biography of Oleg Vinogradov, the artistic director of the Kirov Ballet of St. Petersburgh.
