Federal funding for the Nuits internationales de jazz et de blues de Québec

QUÉBEC, June 12, 1996 Acting Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament for St. Henri-Westmount, the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, today announced federal government support for the Nuits internationales de jazz et de blues de Québec (Les Nuits Black). Once again this summer, visitors and tourists are sure to succumb to music fever, as thousands of jazz- devotees and blues-lovers flood into Québec City to enjoy musicians from here and abroad, discover new musical trends or simply soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

The support offered by the Department to cultural organizations, such as the Nuits internationales de jazz et de blues de Québec (Les Nuits Black), is an example of the Federal Government's commitment to preserving and developing the arts in Canada. It also aims at enhancing heritage tourism initiatives through major cultural events.

The Government of Canada has provided a $22,500 contribution to help cover part of the costs involved in holding this major event under Component III of the Cultural Initiatives Program, Support for Festivals and Special Events.

This program provides financial support for professional cultural groups that enrich our artistic heritage. This assistance allows organizations to improve their management, undertake capital projects, and produce festivals or special events in the performing and visual arts.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 1996 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
