Major Chinese Art Exhibition Announced

OTTAWA, APRIL 9, 1997 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage
Sheila Copps and Chinese Minister of Culture Liu Zhong-de today announced that an art exhibition entitled Major Masterpieces of Chinese Painting of the 20th Century will tour Canada this fall.

The exhibition will feature some 60 examples of the best 20th Century Chinese art and will coincide with the Asia-Pacific conference which Canada is hosting in Vancouver this November. The tour will include Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver and the paintings will be shown in major museums and art galleries.

"This exhibit is a tremendous opportunity for Canadians to become better acquainted with the culture of China during Canada's Year of Asia Pacific," said Minister Copps. "Cultural exchanges, such as this exhibition, are valuable undertakings which will help strengthen the ties between our two countries."

"We are proud to be able to share with Canadians some examples of our Chinese art and culture through the Major Masterpieces of Chinese Painting of the 20th Century exhibition," said Mr. Liu. "We see this as an excellent opportunity to create closer bonds with the people of Canada through the medium of art - the real international language."
