The Department of Canadian Heritage Contributes to Restoring a Heritage Treasure

MONTRÉAL, April 25, 1997 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that the Department will be contributing to the restoration of the famous organs of the Très-Saint-Nom-de-Jésus church. These huge organs, with their 6,500 pipes, were the sixth largest in the world when they were installed in 1915. Now, some 85 years later, they will be restored to their former glory and will still be one of the most powerful instruments in North America.

The Department's support for this initiative is a concrete example of the federal government's commitment to safeguarding our heritage, for the enjoyment of Canadians today and tomorrow.

The Government of Canada has provided a $50,000 contribution to help cover part of the costs involved in the restoration work. Funding for this program was provided for in the February 1997 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This announcement is an example of how the Government of Canada is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
