The Government of Canada Supports the Festival Internationalde Nouvelle Danse

MONTREAL, October 2, 1997 -- The Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage announced today that the Government of Canada is contributing to the 8th Festival international de nouvelle danse which is running in Montreal until October 11.

"The Festival international de nouvelle danse is an exceptional example of our country's cultural vitality. An international event like this provides our artists with a wonderful stage for their creations. The opportunities it affords for mutual inspiration are invaluable, and aid in enriching and disseminating Canadian culture. The Festival is a real springboard for our talented and devoted young artists, providing them with a unique opportunity to perform," said Minister Copps.

The Government of Canada is contributing $478,200 for the 1997 festival, $225,000 of which comes from the Department of Canadian Heritage's Cultural Initiatives Program, $62,000 from the Canada Council, $81,200 from the Department of Human Resources Development, $75,000 from the Federal Office of Regional Development Quebec, and $35,000 from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

The Festival international de nouvelle danse and many other major artistic, cultural and sporting events have become important engines of economic development in the Greater Montreal Region, as they generate tourist activity and help consolidate the city's reputation and serve as a major stimulus to cultural development in Canada and abroad.
Aware of the considerable impact on the economy of all these large-scale cultural events, the Government of Canada has set up a Strategic Plan for Greater Montreal Region to improve the returns they generate. One of the major thrusts of the Plan is to develop the cultural and tourism industries.

This initiative is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
