Appointments to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board

OTTAWA, November 10, 1997 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the reappointment of three members of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.

Ian Davidson
Ian Davidson, an architect and art collector, was Head of Planning and Architecture for Mobil Oil Estates, and a partner in Gardner, Thornton, Davidson, Garettit & Masson, of Vancouver, British Columbia. He was awarded the Seattle Art Fair Leadership Award for 1995. Mr. Davidson is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. As well, he has served on the Advisory Board of the National Gallery of Canada, and the B.C. Place Citizens Advisory Committee.

Stephen B. Smart
Stephen B. Smart is a Partner in Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, a Toronto, Ontario law firm. The author of "Art, the Art Community and the Law", he has lectured on legal issues in the visual arts field. Mr. Smart is Vice-Chairman of the Public Art Commission of the City of Toronto, and was the Founder and First Chairperson of the Friends of the Ontario College of Art.

Susan Whitney
Susan Whitney is Director and President of the Susan Whitney Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, which has organized hundreds of exhibitions of provincially, nationally and internationally renowned artists. Ms. Whitney conducts professional appraisals of art for tax and insurance purposes primarily through the Professional Art Dealer's Association of Canada (PADAC) for government agencies, art galleries and the private sector.

The Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board is an independent administrative tribunal that each year reviews some 1,200 applications for certification of cultural property under the Cultural Property Export and Import Act. Among the Board's responsibilities is to review appeals of applications for export permits that have been refused. The Board includes a mix of generalists, art and heritage dealers, and curators responsible for the preservation of the national heritage.
