Government of Canada to be a Partner in the Festival international de jazz de Montréal

MONTREAL, July 1, 1998 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that a sum of $165,000 has been allocated to the 1998 Festival international de jazz de Montréal. The festival will run from July 1 through 12, 1998.

"Jazz and blues fans are arriving from all over to find the city transformed into a truly global musical meeting place where they can experience the rhythms of the best-known artists in the world and make all kinds of exciting new discoveries. The programming and various activities of this high-calibre event make a tremendous contribution to raising the profile of our culture at home and abroad," said Minister Copps.

The Department of Canadian Heritage contributed to the 1998 Festival international de jazz de Montréal through its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1998 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
