Government of Canada Supports the Governor General's Awards

OTTAWA, September 21, 1998 -- The Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced support for the seventh annual Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, which will be presented on November 6, 1998 at Rideau Hall. A gala performance will be held at the National Arts Centre on November 7, 1998.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has been supporting the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards from the beginning and this year is contributing $150,000 to the event.

Created in 1992 by the Governor General, these awards recognize the achievements of Canadian artists and their contribution to the health and vibrancy of Canadian cultural life.

"Through their dedication, talent and creativitiy, Canadian artists continue to put Canada on the national and international cultural map. As Minister responsible for culture and the arts, I am proud to honour those who have been named winners of the Governor General's Awards, said Minister Copps. These outstanding artists are a source of inspiration for Canada's talented, young and aspiring artists. Their contributions and achievements are recognized in Canada and abroad."

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1998 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how the government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
