Government of Canada is Proud to Support La Cité De L'or in Val-D'or

VAL-D'OR, October 31, 1998 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps announced today that a sum of $27,000 has been granted to the Cité de l'Or in Val-d'Or to buy a mine transport vehicle. Accommodating a total of 24 people, it can travel to a depth of 300 feet below the earth's surface. Visitors will have the opportunity to take an underground tour and enjoy the exhibits on display in the mine. This special vehicle is an exact replica of the kind used for mining and is a valuable collection piece.

"La Cité de l'Or is a showcase for technology in the Canadian mining industry. It gives the descendants of this region's courageous pioneers the chance to appreciate the magnitude of the work their miners accomplished. This is a unique site for the promotion of our heritage, both for its value in tourism and in education," said Minister Copps.

Support to organizations such as la Cité de l'Or is another example of the federal government's desire to create an environment conducive to the protection, conservation and promotion of our heritage throughout Canada, for this generation and generations to come.

This unusual industrial heritage site has become a major tourist attraction in the region. It is therefore in keeping with the longtime aspirations of the area to be a major tourist centre that reflects its own particular character.

The Department of Canadian Heritage made its financial contribution to la Cité de l'Or through the Museums Assistance Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1998 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
