The Government of Canada is Proud to Support The Canadian Symposium of New Painting

OTTAWA, July 18, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps announced today that a sum of $40,000 has been granted to the 17th edition of The Canadian Symposium of New Painting to be held in Baie-Saint-Paul in the Charlevoix region from July 30 to September 5, 1999.

"The Canadian Symposium of New Painting is a focal point for creativity and collaboration where local and foreign artists alike contribute to the creation of a broad thematic canvas. Members of the public can observe the progress of works created at the Symposium and meet the artists as they paint. The exhibition and activities organized in conjunction with the event are helping to promote contemporary art among the Canadian population," said Minister Copps.

The Centre d'art de Baie-Saint-Paul, the Centre d'exposition de Baie-Saint-Paul and the Symposium all promote the arts in the Charlevoix region. The 14 artists, including eight Canadians, participating in this year's Symposium will focus in their paintings on the theme of "Questioning the future."

The Government of Canada has supported The Canadien Symposium of New Painting since 1982 therefore promoting the development and growth of the arts and culture in Canada.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided financial support to the Symposium as part of the Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
