The Government of Canada is Proud to Support the Courtyard of the Senses at the Montréal Botanical Garden

OTTAWA, August 26, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced a grant of $42,232 for the creation of the Courtyard of the Senses at the Montréal Botanical Garden. This garden has been designed for the visually impaired and for all those who would like to discover plants in a new way. It is a place for everyone to awaken their senses, and a place for the visually impaired to discover the plant world.

"This unique exhibit addresses a specific clientele, allowing them to discover a horticultural world through plant species selected for particular characteristics. In addition to enjoying the charm of the Courtyard of the Senses, the general public will also become more sensitive to the realities of visual impairment," said Minister Copps.

The Courtyard of the Senses consists of plant species chosen and categorized according to four themes: gentle, rough, prickly and sticky. The plants are identified in the traditional fashion with labels in both official languages as well as in Braille. The Courtyard of the Senses is designed to allow the circulation of people who are guided by a cane or who are accompanied.

The Government of Canada is proud to support the Courtyard of the Senses exhibition and promote the development and growth of the arts and culture in Canada.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided this financial support to the exhibition as part of the Museums Assistance Program. Financing for this project was forecast in 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
