Government of Canada announces funding for Les FrancoFolies de Montréal

MONTRÉAL, June 9, 2006--Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, and Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, today announced $370,841 in funding from the Government of Canada for the 18th edition of Les FrancoFolies de Montréal, which opened yesterday.

"I am delighted that the Government of Canada is lending its support to this major event. Les FrancoFolies is an ideal opportunity for Montréalers and Canadians from all regions to enjoy some of the latest musical discoveries and re-connect with many of the greatest French-language singers from here and all over," said Minister Oda.

"Canada Economic Development is proud to support this exceptional musical rendezvous, which not only brings in considerable economic benefits but also helps strengthen Montréal's reputation as the City of Festivals. I am sure that this event, by offering such a rich array of rhythms from all over the French-speaking world, will satisfy the thousands of music lovers who have come from near and far to join in this celebration," said Minister Blackburn.

From June 8 to 18, Les FrancoFolies de Montréal will be presenting a varied line-up of concerts and musical events at venues and outdoor stages all around the city.

The $75,000 in funding from Canadian Heritage for this 2006 edition is awarded under the Arts Presentation Canada program, an initiative that gives Canadians the opportunity to experience Canada's rich cultural diversity through professional arts festivals, performances and other artistic events.

Canada Economic Development supported the promotion and international commercialization efforts of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 FrancoFolies de Montréal with a non-repayable contribution of $905,000.
