Government of Canada Supports Opéra de MontréalMONTRÉAL, July 27, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Michael M. Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister Responsible for the Montréal Region, today announced the Government's support for the Opéra de Montréal, which will enable the Opéra to enter the international sets and costume rental market and to achieve its goal of tripling the income it earns from rental activities by 2010."The Government of Canada is proud to contribute to the advancement of the arts in Canada and to their export abroad," said Minister Oda. "Canadian creators have extraordinary know-how. Their work is a source of pride for us and helps to raise the profile of Canadian culture around the world." "The $20,000 in funding will enable the Opéra de Montréal to upgrade its knowledge and make use of opportunities in the international opera market," said Minister Fortier. "By presenting high quality performances of professional artists, the Opéra demonstrates the vitality of Montréal's cultural scene." Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Trade Routes program, which helps arts and cultural entrepreneurs and organizations to penetrate the global marketplace. Support is available for all sectors of arts and culture, including the performing and visual arts, film and video, television, music and sound recording, publishing, design, crafts, heritage preservation and restoration, and new media.
