Government of Canada Announces Funding for Muskoka Lakes Museum Port CarlingPORT CARLING, Ontario, May 20 , 2006 -- On behalf of Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today announced $14,700 in funding for the Muskoka Lakes Museum. The funds will allow the museum to begin year round operations at the museum site in Port Carling."Understanding our past can help us better understand ourselves and one another and guide us in the future," said Minister Oda. "Our museums play a key role in preserving our country's heritage and making it available to Canadians." The Muskoka Lakes Museum will undertake a strategic planning process to guide future management of the site. The museum's board of directors will organize an information gathering process, conduct focus groups, and work with staff to identify areas of opportunity. "Canada's new government has included new investments in the 2006 budget to ensure Canadians have greater access to the arts, culture, and heritage," said Minister Clement. "The Muskoka Lakes Museum has been one of our important cultural, historical, and educational resources for this region since its opening on July 2, 1967." Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Capacity Building component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. Funding announced today was built into the existing fiscal framework.
