Finestone tables and sends letter on redress to ethnocultural organizations

OTTAWA, December 14, 1994 The Honourable Sheila Finestone, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism), today tabled and sent the attached letter to eight ethnocultural organizations.

These groups had made requests for redress on behalf of the Chinese, German, Italian, Jewish, Ukrainian and Indo-Canadian communities.

"The issue is whether to attempt to address the past or to invest in the future. We believe the best approach is to use limited government resources to create a more equitable society today and a better future for generations to come," Mrs. Finestone said.

"In keeping with this approach, the Government remains committed to establishing the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and will proclaim it in the Spring," she said.
