Winners of March 21 Campaign National Video Competition Announced

VANCOUVER, March 24, 1998 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), and Anthony Sherwood, March 21 Campaign Co-Chair, today announced the winners of the 1998 Stop Racism National Video Competition. The competition is a key component of the annual March 21 Campaign marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Students from across Canada received their awards in the presence of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable Sheila Copps.

"We were very impressed by the quality of the videos we received this year," said Dr. Fry. "Students from across Canada showed that there are many creative steps we can take to put an end to racism, that they can make a difference, and their voices are important to ending racism."

The Prince of Wales was on hand to take part in the 10th annual March 21 Campaign commemoration to raise awareness about racism and to encourage individuals and organizations to eliminate racial discrimination. Thousands of Canadians participated in hundreds of events across the country to mark March 21, including commemorations hosted by Dr. Fry and Mayor Mel Lastman at Toronto City Hall and a Montreal concert featuring the hip-hop trio Dubmatique, the Campaign's Quebec spokespersons.

The annual Stop Racism National Video Competition is a key component of the March 21 Campaign. It is open to youth in Grades 7 to 13 and CEGEP. The 10 winning videos for 1998 are now being broadcast on CBC/Radio-Canada and on MuchMusic/Musique Plus in an edited format. Information on the March 21 Campaign is available by calling 1-888-March21, and on the March 21 web site: http://www.march21.com.

"As Canada's population becomes more diverse, we all need to recognize discrimination for what it is and take action to end it," said Mr. Sherwood.

The Department of Canadian Heritage was joined in the 1998 March 21 Campaign by corporate partners: the Royal Bank of Canada, Panasonic, Sympatico, Onramp Network Services Inc. and by its media partners: CBC/Radio-Canada and MuchMusic/Musique Plus.

A list of winners is attached.
