Fry Praises Mcgill Project that Dispels Myths about Black Community

Montréal, February 7, 1997 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), the Honourable Hedy Fry, today praised the McGill Consortium for Ethnicity and Strategic Social Planning for its excellent work in leading the research for the Canadian Black Community Demographic Project.

"An important goal for Black History Month is to bring the reality of the Black community to life for Canadians. It is a chance to honour remarkable Black citizens, to furnish role models for Black youth and to dispel damaging myths," said Dr. Fry. "The project's research results refute a number of disparaging myths about the Black community."

"The results of this demographic study will be invaluable for those of us in government and for the communities themselves in determining the future of Blacks in Canada," said the Secretary of State. "There can be no racial harmony if myths and stereotypes persist in society."

Dr. Fry congratulated the Consortium for Ethnicity and Strategic Social Planning and its director, Dr. Jim Torczyner, as well as the community advisors from across Canada, for their excellent work.
