Secretary of State Hedy Fry Announces Winners of Stop Racism National Video CompetitionVANCOUVER, March 21, 1997 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) today, in Robson Square Conference Centre, announced the winners of the Stop Racism National Video Competition for students in grades 7-13. The competition was designed by the government of Canada to commemorate March 21- the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination."The quality of the entries was extraordinary. They were diverse, creative and professional. Yet the messages had one thing in common. They were all direct and hard hitting," Dr. Fry told a youth audience today. "These young filmmakers recognized the negative aspect of racism and were clear in their commitment to stop it," said Dr. Fry. There were 100 entries. These were reviewed by a jury who looked for innovation in style and/or entrant's production values and clear messaging of the Stop Racism theme. Jury members represented the arts and cultural community, students and business. (Attached is a list of the Jury members). The 10 top winners were not given in order of precedence, but were seen to be equally worthy. (A list of the winning teams is attached). TV hosts Terry David Mulligan of MuchMusic, Geneviève Borne of MusiquePlus and Demore Barnes of CBC, The Paper Boys, Dal-Dil-Vog, and Atlantis Bus, three highly popular local bands, Rick Colbourne, singer, Christine Laforest, Quebec singer/songwriter, Anthony Sherwood, actor, and Stu Jackson, General Manager and Head Coach of the Vancouver Grizzlies, congratulated the winners and joined Dr. Fry in thanking all the contest participants. Some of winning videos will be broadcast on CBC/Radio-Canada and MuchMusic/MusiquePlus beginning today, March 21. There will be an interview on the CBC Youth program Jonovisionduring which representatives of three winning teams will discuss what they learned about stopping racism. Youth are the primary target of the Campaign and the video competition was designed to involve them in an interactive way. Students in Grades 7 to 13 were invited in December to enter the Stop Racism National Video Competition. The videos were to be from one to three minutes in length, in either official language and were to be on the theme of the elimination of racial discrimination. The videos had to be written, performed, produced and directed by a team of students of up to five members. A teacher could facilitate the project. Entries were to be post marked February 21, 1997 and mailed to the CBC, media partner for the 1997 March 21 Campaign. Additional information about the competition was available in a brochure and on the March 21 Campaign's web site at http://www.pch.gc.ca/multi/March21.htm. One hundred videos were entered by the contest deadline and were reviewed by the jury based on creative and effective communication of the Stop Racism message innovation in style and/or content and production values. The aforementioned criteria were the primary considerations in selecting 10 winning videos, although some consideration was also given to regional and linguistic diversity. Winners also represent a range of video styles and grade levels. Film and television industry professionals from CBC/Radio-Canada, MuchMusic/ MusiquePlus, and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television participated in the selection of 10 winners. The individuals members of the jury were: Anthony Sherwood (Jury Chair), Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television; John Kowalchuk, Panasonic; Jonathan Torrens, CBC's Jonovision; Morgan Fleury, MuchMusic; Saeed Khan, Full Screen; Maria Teresa Larrain, independent filmmaker; Bindu Dhaliwal, The Students' Commission; and Harvey Brodkin, Department of Canadian Heritage. The videos were submitted with run times of one to three minutes, but the 10 winning videos have been edited to a 30 second Public Service Announcement format which will be screened on CBC/SRC and MuchMusic/MusiquePlus beginning March 21. Members of the winning teams will receive a Panasonic ShockWave personal stereo cassette player and a Campaign T-shirt.
