Winners of March 21, 1999 Campaign National Video Competition Announced

TORONTO, March 20, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), today announced the winners of the 1999 Stop Racism National Video Competition. The winning videos and the concert to honour the winners will be telecast tomorrow on MuchMusic.

"The Campaign has a simple message -- Racism. Stop it," said Dr. Fry. "Racism and Canada are two words that just don't go together." She explained that young Canadians have responded energetically to the Campaign message.

"This year, we received more videos than ever before," added Dr. Fry. "It was very difficult to decide on only ten winning teams. I consider everyone who entered a winner because each one of them made a personal commitment to end racism. The members of the teams moved from good intentions to action. They did it with energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. We have a lot to learn from all these young people."

For this year's competition, the Department of Canadian Heritage received a total of 314 entries from across Canada, more than double the 1998 number of 128. The first year of the contest, the Department received 68 videotapes. The annual Stop Racism National Video Competition is a key component of the March 21 Campaign. It is open to youth in Grades 7 to 13 and CEGEP. The 10 winning videos are now being broadcast on MuchMusic and MusiquePlus in an edited format. Information on the March 21 Campaign is available on the March 21 web site http://www.march21.com or by calling 1-888-March21.

Thousands of Canadians have participated in hundreds of events across the country to mark March 21. This year, for example, the Edmonton Arts Council is supporting the Harmony Movement's travelling "THEM=US" photographic exhibition on Canada's diversity. The Comité de Solidarité at the Université de Sherbrooke, is sponsoring a public choreographed theatre show about situations involving intercultural integration and intolerance. The Urban Alliance on Race Relations in Toronto has asked David Suzuki to help them hold an event analysing the impact on society of the declaration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The Department of Canadian Heritage was joined in the 1999 March 21 Campaign by corporate partners: the Royal Bank of Canada, Panasonic, Onramp Network Services Inc., Roots and Eatons, and by its media partners: MuchMusic/Musique Plus, Tribute, Teen Tribute, Cool and Famous Players.
