Hedy Fry Announces Support to a National Conference on Human Rights and Anti-Racism

OTTAWA, October 29, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), today announced a grant of $50,000 to the National Association of Japanese Canadians for the planning of a conference on human rights in Canada in the new millennium.

"The National Association of Japanese Canadians has always been at the forefront of efforts to combat racism and further the promotion of human rights in Canada. This conference will foster dialogue on issues of significance to all Canadians," said Dr. Fry.

The conference, entitled Human Rights for the 21st Century - Rethinking Anti-Racism and Human Rights: Sharpening the Tools, will seek to create a national forum in which issues of racism can be explored and strategies for broad application in the pursuit of anti-racism and human rights initiatives can be developed and adopted.

The grant was awarded under the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Multiculturalism Program is targeted at all Canadian citizens and permanent residents and financial assistance is provided to Canadian voluntary and nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, non-governmental institutions, individuals and private sector companies (in cases where the projects are of a non-commercial nature), for projects which address the priorities and objectives of the program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
