Marchi Opens "Caring for the Earth" Exhibition

Montréal, October 17, 1996 On behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, the Honourable Sergio Marchi, Minister of the Environment, today opened Caring for the Earth, an exhibition organized as part of the World Conservation Congress of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

The IUCN will be opening its Congress to the public for the first time, giving visitors an opportunity to take part in different workshops between October 17 and 21. To mark this special event, the Government of Canada will be presenting a fascinating public exhibition entitled Caring for the Earth.

The exhibition brings together more than one hundred exhibitors from the private and public sectors representing IUCN members from every continent. They include such prestigious bodies as the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institute, which will be presenting its travelling exhibition, Vanishing Amphibians, as well as the Canadian Museum of Nature.

The exhibition will complement the workshop activities, foster discussion and highlight methods, techniques and concrete solutions for conserving our resources and promoting sustainable use. Visitors will find brochures, maps, posters, magazines and CD-ROMS. They will also be able to enjoy documentaries, lectures, performances by theatre and dance troupes, all on different environmental themes, presented on the stage in the exhibition.

During the opening ceremonies, Minister Marchi walked down Canada Avenue, where all the federal government's different kiosks are located. Canada is a privileged country, in terms of natural resources. These resources represent real wealth for our environment and our economy. The Canadian government, through its departments and agencies, is committed to conserving this wealth and ensuring its sustainable development, said the Minister during his visit.
