Canada to Participate in Expo 2000

OTTAWA, May 21, 1997 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that Canada has accepted Germany's invitation to participate in Expo 2000 in Hannover. The exposition will take place from June 1 to October 31, 2000. In announcing this decision, Minister Copps reiterated the federal government's support for Calgary's bid to host Expo 2005. Voting on the host for Expo 2005 will take place in the General Assembly of the International Exhibitions Bureau on June 12, 1997.

The central theme of Expo 2000 is "Humankind - Nature - Technology" and it will focus on health and nutrition, living and working, environment and development, communication and information, leisure and mobility and education and culture.

"Expo 2000 is a wonderful international opportunity for Canadians to come together and show the world we are ready for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century," said Minister Copps.

She added, "I invite our provincial and territorial colleagues and the private sector to join with us as partners in planning Canada's participation in Expo 2000. Together, we can present to the world Canada a country that is technologically proficient and culturally sophisticated, environmentally responsible and open for business."

Some 200 countries and organizations are expected to participate in Expo 2000. Canada's participation in Expo 2000 demonstrates the importance Canada attaches to its relationship with Germany and with other member countries of the European Union.

Canada has an unbroken record of outstanding performance both as participant and host in international expositions. Canada's pavilion at Taejon (Korea) Expo '93 was recognized as the most popular international pavilion of 108 participating countries. In Seville '92 (Spain), Canada's pavilion was again rated number one.

The Department of Canadian Heritage will coordinate Canada's participation in Expo 2000 in partnership with federal departments, provincial/territorial governments, and the private sector.
