Canadians Invited to a Virtual Tour of the Canada Pavilion at Expo 98

OTTAWA, August 21, 1998 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today invited Canadians and people the world over to take a virtual tour of the Canada Pavilion at Expo 98, taking place in Lisbon, Portugal. For the first time, Canada's pavilion at an international exposition can be experienced virtually through Canada's Expo 98 website at http://www.expo98.gc.ca.

Developed by Bell Canada, sponsor of the website, the tour recreates the 16th century voyages of the Portuguese to Newfoundland aboard a Portuguese caravel. Visitors sail to Canada's three oceans, experience its coasts and inland waterways, and climb aboard its Maritime information highway where they can see the influence of the oceans on Canadian culture and learn about ocean-related industries technologies and expertise.

The Canada Pavilion, one of the most popular attractions of Expo 98, has had an overwhelming number of visitors to date. It welcomed its 700,000th visitor this week and has daily totals exceeding 9,000.
