The Government of Canada is Proud to be Associated with the Montréal First Peoples' Festival

MONTRÉAL, June 6, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced financial support of $25,000 to Terres en vues, société pour la diffusion de la culture autochtone for the Montréal First Peoples' Festival 2000. This Festival will begin June 12, in Montréal, and will end on June 21, which is National Aboriginal Day.

"Summer brings a great variety of festivals in celebration of the many ethnic groups whose culture so enriches our country," said Minister Copps. "The Montréal First Peoples' Festival 2000 demonstrates Amerindian and Inuit life, its traditions and accomplishments, which form an integral part of our heritage. This is an occasion for all Canadians to unite and explore the richness and diversity of Aboriginal culture."

Dance, song and film are the highlight of this 10th edition of the Festival, whose theme is Nunavik Across the Millennium. In the heart of the city, craftspeople, sculptors and engravers will exhibit and share their art with visitors.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has made this financial support to the 2000 edition of the Montréal First People's Festival 2000 under its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
