Sheila Copps Announces Interim Funding for 18 Aboriginal Friendship Centres

BRANTFORT, October 11, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced interim funding of $898,992 for 18 Aboriginal Friendship Centres. The funding will provide financial support to assist with the delivery of programs, from September 2001 through to March 2002.

"The Government of Canada is proud to provide assistance to these Aboriginal Friendship Centres," said Minister Copps. "The Centres provide much needed support to Aboriginal peoples living in urban areas and respond to a growing need for services related to social, economic and cultural concerns."

The aim of the Aboriginal Friendship Centres Program is to maintain a network of centres in urban areas which are designed to improve the quality of life of Aboriginal peoples residing in or travelling through urban communities. The Centres provide assistance in areas such as housing, education, human resource development and employment, youth and family services, health, recreation and cultural activities.

The Aboriginal Friendship Centres Program is managed and administered by the National Association of Friendship Centres, which operates the centres in conjunction with Provincial/Territorial Associations and local Friendship Centres.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
