Government of Canada Announces Funding for Native Council of Prince Edward Island

CHARLOTTETOWN, October 8, 2002 -- Member of Parliament (Hillsborough) Shawn Murphy, on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $115,000 in funding for the Native Council of Prince Edward Island, under the Aboriginal Representative Organizations Program. The funding will enable the Native Council of Prince Edward Island to encourage its members to participate in discussions of social, economic and political issues, in order to advance their general living conditions and achieve a level of self-government.

"The Government of Canada is committed to work in partnership with Aboriginal peoples and communities. This funding will allow the Association to address a wide range of Aboriginal issues, needs and goals," said Mr. Murphy.

The Council works with all levels of government and private agencies to improve social, educational and employment opportunities for off-reserve Aboriginal peoples of P.E.I. It also fosters and strengthens language, cultural identity and pride among Aboriginal peoples of P.E.I.

The objective of the Aboriginal Representative Organizations Program is to maintain a consultative framework of Inuit, Métis, and Non-Status Indian representative organizations, through which governments can address the social, economic, political and cultural issues affecting them.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
