Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Métis Addictions Council of Saskatchewan Inc.

REGINA, April 3, 2003 -- Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Member of Parliament (Wascana), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $10,000 for the Métis Addictions Council of Saskatchewan Inc. to help finance a Métis Youth Leadership Capacity Building project.

"The potential in every young Aboriginal person can bring great benefits to their communities and all of Canada," said Minister Goodale. "This project will help Métis youth in Regina support the development of youth services."

The project will assist Métis youth to build their capacity, leadership skills, and provide advice on the establishment and operation of youth services.

The Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centres Initiative provides young Aboriginals aged 15 to 24, living in urban settings, with projects and activities that are culturally relevant and based in the Aboriginal community. The Initiative supports and assists Aboriginal youth in enhancing their economic, social and personal prospects.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
