Liard Aboriginal Women's Society helps Aboriginal Women play a lead role in developing Kaska Nation's Constitution

WHITEHORSE, November 12, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Yukon) Larry Bagnell, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $56,000 in funding for the Liard Aboriginal Women's Society. The funds will enable the Society to finance Phase 2 of its initiative to integrate the traditional and contemporary views, values and roles of Kaska women into their nation's constitution.

"The drafting of a constitution is a long and arduous endeavour, and we must be able to assist the Kaska people to develop it and make it something to be proud of," said Mr. Bagnell. "This funding will help bring the Kaska Nation closer to its goal of self-governance."

"I wish to congratulate the Liard Aboriginal Women's Society for the important work it is doing to help Kaska women make their voices heard," said Minister Frulla. "The findings of this initiative will become valuable documents for the Kaska Nation and for all Canadians."

Phase 2 of the Liard Aboriginal Women's Society's initiative involves developing a profile of Kaska women, including information on their backgrounds and knowledge. Political leaders will be able to refer to the findings when they need guidance or support during the process of developing a constitution for the Kaska Nation.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Self-Government Initiative of its Aboriginal Women's Program. The Initiative enables Aboriginal women to participate fully and equitably in the consultations and decision-making process related to Aboriginal self-government issues.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
