QUÉBEC CITY, July 7, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the appointment of Luc Lainé to the position of Federal Aboriginal Commissioner for Québec City's 400th Anniversary Celebrations.

"Mr. Lainé's vast experience and thorough understanding of the Aboriginal and government sectors are a valuable asset for the team," said Minister Frulla. "He will bring a different viewpoint and fresh ideas to the process by representing the interests of Aboriginal communities in the organization of activities as part of Québec City's 400th Anniversary Celebrations."

The Minister of Canadian Heritage also stated that the Federal Commissioner and the Federal Aboriginal Commissioner will work in close cooperation in preparing festivities so as to coordinate their efforts and the activities of the Government of Canada in the context of Québec City's 400th Anniversary Celebrations.

Luc Lainé has been president of ORIHWA Aboriginal Public Affairs, Management and Development Inc. since 1998. He is also a member and a former chief associate of the Huron Wendat nation of Quebec. Over the past 30 years, Mr. Lainé has served with many federal and Aboriginal organizations. He has also worked with the Royal Commission on Aboriginal People and held various posts at the Protocol Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs and at the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. He was recently elected a member of the board of directors of the First Peoples' Business Association.

A proud partner in Québec City's 400th Anniversary Celebrations, the Government of Canada invites all Canadians to take part in activities that highlight this important milestone in our history. Particular attention will be given to projects that offer young people an opportunity to reflect on Canada's place in the world and its bilingual character. Various learning activities and cultural and language exchanges will be organized as part of the Celebrations.
