The Government of Canada Promotes Children's Rights

BURNABY, November 8, 2002 -- Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (Vancouver South-Burnaby) Herb Dhaliwal, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced financial support of $30,000 for the Society for Children and Youth of British Columbia. The funds will enable the Society to carry out a project on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and Public Policy.

"The Government of Canada has a commitment to protect and ensure children's rights. By preparing workshops on the UNCRC, the Society for Children and Youth of British Columbia is promoting the Convention and making its provisions widely known -- essential steps in protecting children's rights," said Minister Dhaliwal.

The Society for Children and Youth intends to prepare and implement training workshops on the UNCRC for participants whose work influences public policy affecting children. Participants will include representatives of governmental, non-governmental, and youth organizations. The workshops will help train policymakers at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels in the use of the UNCRC in their work and will also solicit their feedback on obstacles to the implementation of the UNCRC.

The Department of Canadian Heritage provides this funding under its Human Rights Program. This program promotes the development, understanding, respect for and enjoyment of human rights in Canada.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
