The Department of Canadian Heritage Announces Funding for Montréal YMCA

MONTRÉAL, January 21, 2003 -- Lucienne Robillard, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament
(Westmount--Ville-Marie), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $19,840 in funding for the Montréal YMCA. The funds will enable the YMCA to revise, re-design and reprint its original Hands Up! manual to make it more professional, compact, and affordable.

"The Government of Canada is committed to ensure and protect children's rights. By developing the manual Hands Up! A Hands On Approach to Children's Rights, the Montréal YMCA is making an essential contribution to promoting children's rights," said Minister Robillard.

The Hands Up! manual provides a participatory, hands-on approach for educators, childcare and youth workers to integrate children's rights education into community programs for children and youth. This manual was the result of a three-year collaboration between the Montréal YMCA, the YMCA of Ecuador, and the Bancroft Elementary School in Montréal. The manual was produced in English, French, and Spanish.

The Human Rights Program at the Department of Canadian Heritage promotes the development, understanding, respect for and enjoyment of human rights in Canada. This includes providing financial assistance to eligible organizations.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
