Government of Canada Announces Funding for the University College of Cape Breton Children's Rights

SYDNEY, April 25, 2003 -- Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament (Sydney-Victoria), on behalf of Minister Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $29,487 for the University College of Cape Breton Children's Rights Centre to help finance the reprint and translation of its Grades 6 and 8 curricula on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

"The Government of Canada is committed to promote and protect children's rights," said Mr. Eyking. "This funding will ensure that both teachers and students will have a curriculum on children's rights in both official languages and that they will be introduced to the rights protected by the Convention on the Rights of the Child."

The project will allow the Children's Rights Centre to respond to a number of requests it has received from French language and French immersion schools to make the curriculum available in both official languages.

Making these educational materials available on the Children's Rights Centre Web site and reprinting them ensures they are available to Canadians across the country. The English curricula are currently available on the Children's Rights Centre Web site.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Human Rights Program. The Program promotes the development, understanding, respect, and enjoyment of human rights in Canada. This includes providing a selected number of grants and contributions to eligible organizations.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
