Announcement to Honour Canadian Soldiers in the Battle of Vimy Ridge

OTTAWA, April 5, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the Peace Tower flag will fly at half mast on April 9, 2000 to commemorate the battle of Vimy Ridge.

"Vimy Ridge was a defining moment for Canada's military history," said Minister Copps. "As Canadians, it is important that we continue to mark our participation in these events. Nearly 4,000 Canadian soldiers died fighting for freedom at Vimy Ridge."

On the morning of April 9, 1917, Easter Monday, during the First World War, the Canadian Corps - with all four of its divisions together for the first time - and assisted by British units, attacked Vimy Ridge, a heavily defended German stronghold in France. The 7 km long Ridge was in the hands of the Allies three days later. More than 170,000 people took part in this important victory which marked a turning-point in the war. The Canadian achievement at Vimy Ridge won for Canada a separate signature on the Versailles Treaty and established a feeling of Canadian nationhood.

A Private Member's Bill has recently been prepared to declare April 9th, Vimy Ridge Day.
