Canada Place Launched in Moncton

MONCTON, June 12, 2000 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Senator Fernand Robichaud today officially launched Canada Place in the lobby of the Government of Canada Building, in downtown Moncton.

Canada Place is a centre where Canadians of all ages can discover a variety of educational resources and information on Government of Canada services and programs. A Service Canada Centre will be on-site. The centre in Moncton is the fourth Canada Place to be established after Toronto, Winnipeg and Regina.

"Canada Place is a new way of promoting and improving access to government services and programs for Canadians. It is located in downton Moncton because we want the Government of Canada to be in the heart of the community," said Minister Copps. "Canada Place will welcome school groups and the general public who are interested in learning more about their country's governance, culture and heritage."

Canada Place is equipped with high-speed Internet hook-up for public use and a display area that highlights Canada, its government, its people and ingenuity. It is designed to provide Canadians with an open forum to learn more about their country, to embark on a virtual voyage across the country and to access information about federal programs and services.

"I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to congratulate all the partners involved with this project," said Senator Robichaud. "Today we kick-off National Public Service Week and I want to highlight the teamwork in the making of Canada Place. By creating a partnership between federal institutions, Canada Place is an example of what is possible when Canadians work together."

Canada Place in Moncton is a partnership of 17 departments and agencies of the Government of Canada. It is located on the main floor of the Government of Canada Building, 1045 Main Street, Moncton, New Brunswick and is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
