Don Boudria Unveils the Web Site for the Canada Component of the Games of La Francophonie

OTTAWA, September 18, 2000 -- Minister of State and Government House Leader in the House of Commons and President of the Steering Committee for the Games of La Francophonie, Don Boudria, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today unveiled the web site for the Canada component of the IV Games of La Francophonie, to be held in the Ottawa-Hull in 2001.

"The site at http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca/Francophonie2001 will give Internet users access to very valuable information about the participation of artists and athletes, from the Canada component, in the Games of La Francophonie," stated Mr. Boudria. "Having had the pleasure of being in Madagascar for the 1997 Games, I was given the opportunity to witness the excellence, determination and talent of our young artists and athletes," added the Minister.

"I encourage all Canadians to find out more about the Games of La Francophonie and to keep up on the events relating to these unique Games to be held in Canada for the first time," said Minister Copps. The web site for the Canada component, which can be reached through the Canadian Heritage site, not only provides a history of the Games of La Francophonie and information about the athletic and cultural events, but also shows Canadian medal recipients at the Games in Morocco, France and Madagascar.

From July 14 to 24, 2001, Ottawa-Hull will host approximately 2,900 artists and athletes, from about 50 countries and governments which are members of the international Francophonie. They will take part in the athletic and cultural competitions of the IV Games of La Francophonie. The Canadian delegation will consist of more than 600 individuals from the Canada, Canada-Quebec and Canada-New Brunswick components.

The web site will also include the names and profiles of the participating athletes and artists in the Canadian component who will gain both national and international exposure through these games. Once the Games begin, their rankings and results will be posted daily.
