Sheila Copps Addresses the Hamilton Muslim Community

HAMILTON, October 12, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today attended an event organized by the Muslim Association of Hamilton.

"This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Government of Canada's Multiculturalism Policy, with respect to national or ethnic origin and religion as a fundamental characteristic of Canadian society. Today, more than ever, we must reaffirm the fundamental values of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms which include equality of citizens of every religion and every ethnic origin."

The purpose of today's event was to demonstrate community solidarity and support to the Muslim community. Other guests included Mayor of the city of Hamilton Robert Wade; Chief of police of Hamilton-Wentworth Ken Robertson, MPP for Hamilton Mountain Marie Bountrogianni, MP for Hamilton West Stan Keyes and MP for Stoney Creek Tony Valeri.
