Appointment to the National Capital Commission Announced

OTTAWA, November 7, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Ruth A. Spence, of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, as a member of the National Capital Commission. The Appointment is for a one-year term.

Ms. Spence was born in Campbellford, Ontario. She received an education in nursing and worked as a registered nurse from 1962 to 1968. From 1968 to 1984, she was the executive director of the YWCA, in Yellowknife.

Ms. Spence has played an active role in professional organizations and in her community. Some of her current and past involvements include being a member of the Stanton Yellowknife Hospital Board of Management, the chair of the Yellowknife City Council Health and Social Services Advisory Committee and the president of the Northwest Territories branch of the Consumers' Association of Canada.

Ms Spence was also a Yellowknife city councillor from 1978 to 1982 and from 1994 to 1997.

The National Capital Commission plans for and controls the use of federal lands in the National Capital Region. It highlights the national significance of the region as the seat of the Government of Canada. It also promotes activities that will enrich the cultural and social fabric of Canada, taking into account the federal character, the official languages and heritage of Canada. It also creates a meeting place for Canadians, and safeguards and preserves the Capital for future generations by developing and managing real assets.
