Appointment to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

OTTAWA, November 7, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Marie Giguère, of Montreal, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The appointment is for a three-year term.

Ms. Giguère has been Senior Vice-President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of Molson Inc. since 1999. From 1997 to 1999, she was Executive Vice-President, Corporate Affairs, and General Secretary of the Montreal Exchange. Ms. Giguère was a lawyer with the firm of Martineau Walker, from 1976 to 1997, and lectured in securities law at McGill University, from 1990 to 1993.

Ms. Giguère has been a governor of McGill University, a member of the Conseil des Arts of the Montréal Urban Community, a member of the Board of Directors of the Douglas Hospital Foundation, President of the Special Committee of the Regulatory Division of the Montreal Exchange and a member of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is the country's largest cultural institution. Operating two national television networks, four national radio networks, specialty television services, various Internet sites and an international shortwave radio service, the CBC provides opportunities for our artists and touches the lives of Canadians on a daily basis. It is the only cultural institution and the only broadcaster offering services to all Canadians in English and in French across Canada, as well as in several Aboriginal languages across the North.
