OTTAWA, December 3, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced two appointments to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, for three-year terms. Louise Lalonde-Lamarre was appointed as a member from Quebec and Douglas E. Oldford as a member from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ms. Lalonde-Lamarre plays an active role in her community and is very knowledgeable in art history. She has been a member of the board at Groupe Bellechasse Santé inc., since 1987, and at the Centre d'accueil Marcelle-Ferron, since 1995. She has served as a member of the board at the Institut de cardiologie de Montréal and at the National Gallery of Canada. Ms. Lalonde-Lamarre is a member of various organizations, including the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts and Amnesty International.

Mr. Oldford has vast experience in both the public and the private sectors. In particular, he served as a member of the Newfoundland House of Assembly, from 1991 to 2000. He was also an industrial training consultant with the provincial Department of Education, from 1982 to 1991, and a branch manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia, from 1969 to 1977.

The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister in carrying out her powers under the Historic Sites and Monuments Act, and makes recommendations to the Minister respecting the marking or commemoration of people, places and events of national historic significance. It also advises the Minister on the designation of heritage railway stations for the purposes of the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act.
