Appointment to the National Arts Centre Corporation

OTTAWA, December 3, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Louis Lagassé to the National Arts Centre Corporation Board of Trustees, for a three-year term.

Notary and financier, Mr. Lagassé obtained both a degree in Law, from the University of Montreal, and a diploma in German Language Studies, from the University of Salzburg, in Austria, in 1970. In 1973, he earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Western Ontario. In 1975, he joined the firm Lagassé Lagassé, founded by his father. In 1985, he founded, together with other investors, C-MAC Industries Inc., which specializes in manufacturing micro-electronic components for telecommunications, computers, military and medical equipment and automobiles.

He has contributed financially to numerous projects, including the acquisition of the Granada Theatre for the City of Sherbrooke. He has created several foundations, including the J. A. Louis Lagassé Foundation, which promotes the development of the arts, music, philanthropy, science and culture. Mr. Lagassé has been involved in countless causes and has chaired various fundraising campaigns to support non-profit organizations. He has been a member of numerous boards of directors. He served as President of the Sherbrooke Chamber of Commerce, in 1978; as President of the Quebec Chamber of Commerce, in 1986; and as a member of the board of directors, as well as the executive board, of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, from 1985 to 1990. In the cultural sector, he has been a member of the Orford Arts Centre Corporation, a member of the advisory board of Piggery Theatre Inc. and the board of directors of the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation.

Mr. Lagassé has received a number of honours and awards, including the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, in 1992 and two honorary doctorates.

The National Arts Centre Corporation is a federal cultural organization dedicated primarily to developing and showcasing the performing arts in the National Capital Region and across Canada.
