Minister Copps Announces Appointment to Canadian Museum of Civilization

OTTAWA, March 21, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Claudia Simon, of Big Cove First Nation, New Brunswick, to the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. The appointment is for a three-year term.

During her 35 years of professional experience in public and community service, Ms. Simon has specialized in the areas of education and health care. She was the first Native teacher to be appointed Human Rights Commissioner for the Province of New Brunswick, from 1987-1993.

Ms. Simon has been Director of Health at the Big Cove Health Care Centre since 1991. From 1976 to1990, she was Vice-principal of the Big Cove Federal School and served as Indian Education Consultant for the Union of New Brunswick Indians from 1986 to1987.

Ms. Simon has been involved in many organizations, such as the Regional Mental Health Commission, the Review Committee for Alternative Measures Program for Youth Offenders, the Professional Indian Education Curriculum Development Advisory Committee, the Curriculum Development Committee for the Micmac Language, and the Improvement of Indian Education Committee for School District 40.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is a Crown corporation responsible for the management of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its affiliate, the Canadian War Museum, as well as the Virtual Museum of New France. One of the Corporation's key objectives is to enhance understanding of Canada's heritage for current and future generations, thereby instilling a sense of national identity in all Canadians.
